PreSchool Teacher

POSITION TITLE: Pre-School Teacher                           SITE: CDC

REPORTS TO:  Center Director                                                       

GENERAL FUNCTION:  The Teacher works under the direct supervision of the Director.  The Teacher plans and implements an age-appropriate curriculum, supervises the children using the Nurtured Heart Approach, and communicates concerns to the Director and parents.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Must meet requirements for a Child Development Teacher Permit as mandated by the CA Department of Education. (Requirements are 24 Child Development units and 16 General Education units –OR- AA degree in Child Development plus 3 units of supervised field experience.)  Experience working with children at risk of child abuse and neglect.  Prior experience in a Child Development Center setting preferred.  Professional person who is dependable, nurturing, and consistent with children and parents.  Must be flexible with hours and duties.  Must have ambulatory, auditory and visual skills to observe and physically intervene with residents when required.  Must have the physical ability to lead and interact in group activities and perform related physical skills, including, but not limited to crouching, lifting 50 pounds, running, crawling on hands and knees, and walking up and down stairs.  Bi-lingual and bi-cultural desirable.  Ability to comply with employment requirements, including but not limited to; CPR/Pediatric 1st Aid Certification, satisfactory results of background check, health exam and TB test. Must have a clear DMV record and be approved by insurance carrier to drive agency vehicles. 

MAJOR TASKS: 

  1. Plan and implement a developmental curriculum appropriate for infant, toddler and preschool-age children.  Curriculum activities shall include weekly activities in the following areas:  Art, Math, Science, Music, Language, Development, Motor Development, and Dramatic Play.
  2. Incorporates the “Nurtured Heart Approach” techniques to teach values and create successes using active, experiential, proactive and creative recognitions.  Our goal is to nurture the hearts of the children we serve. We do this when we point out their successful behaviors and consistently implement a break when the unwanted behaviors arise. We offer the gift of nurturance by filling their days with relentless recognition, optimism and consistency.
  3. Assists in planning and implementing long-range and short-range program goals for the group and also individual children.
  4. Document each child’s daily experiences and behaviors.  Bring any significant observations to the attention of the Center Director.
  5. Assists in training of Teachers and Volunteers in areas of planning, policies and techniques.
  6. Participate in scheduled staff meetings, parent conferences and other meetings, Open House, Orientation, etc.  May be asked to attend some evening and weekend parent and staff events.
  7. Engage in supervision meetings with Center Director on a regular basis.
  8. Keep classroom clean and in orderly condition.  Shares staff responsibility for bulletin boards, Center décor and daily housekeeping as necessary.
  9. Work with staff members for program continuity and promotion of the philosophy and goals of the Center.
  10. Exhibit interest in and commitment to personal and professional growth through attendance at workshops, conferences, classes, etc.
  11. Keep parents informed of the need for change of clothes and other necessary items for the children in your care.
  12. Will be required to drive agency and personal vehicle on fieldtrips.
  13. Perform a developmental assessment on each child in your care two to three times yearly, depending on the age of the child.
  14. Supervises indoor and outdoor activities, being aware of safety factors and provides children an environment which encourages maximum physical and intellectual development.
  15. Develops and maintains effective relationships with parents, students, volunteers, children, staff and community members.
  16. Complete paperwork as required and directed.
  17. Keep children’s developmental profiles and portfolios up to date and inform Center Director of any deficiencies.
  18. Maintains required Exemplary Program Standards records as required by the Department of Education.
  19. Assist in documenting or reporting Suspected Child Abuse reports.
  20. Observe and record weekly Progress Reports on each child’s behavior and development, to be given to the parents Wednesday of each week.
  21. Conducts Parent Conferences for Development Assessments two to three times yearly, depending on the age of the child, and as necessary for other reasons.
  22. Performs Daily Health Checks of each child before admittance, records attendance, and any other important information in communication book.
  23. Perform other duties as assigned by the Center Director.
