Child Care Worker*

POSITION TITLE:     Childcare Worker                   SITE:   Children’s Shelter

REPORTS TO:          Residential Supervisor                                   

GENERAL FUNCTION:  Provides for the protection, physical safety and well-being of children (6-18 years) in a residential setting, supervises planned group and/or individual structured activities according to a daily schedule.  During Day Treatment/Rehabilitation hours, CCW’s at the Children’s Shelter will work as Rehabilitation Staff under the direction of a licensed or waivered therapist/staff member in delivering all services in the Day Treatment schedule, except for psychotherapy.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Must possess maturity, good judgment and the ability to be a positive role model for children 6-18 years.  Experience in residential treatment and /or a BA in human science field required.  Experience working with disabled or medically fragile clients a big plus. Must be a professional with the ability to effectively set limits and function in crisis-oriented and high stress situations.  Must be able to work as part of a team and be able to work shifts up to 10 hours in length.  Must have ambulatory, auditory and visual skills to observe and physically intervene with residents when required.  Must have the physical ability to lead and interact in group activities and perform related physical skills, including, but not limited to crouching, lifting 50 pounds, running, crawling on hands and knees, and walking up and down stairs.  CPI trained, bi-lingual and bi-cultural desirable. Ability to comply with employment requirements, including but not limited to; CPR/Pediatric 1st Aid Certification, satisfactory results of background check, health exam and TB test. Must have a clear DMV record and be approved by insurance carrier to drive agency vehicles. 

MAJOR TASKS: 

  1. Coordinate and participate in the daily activities of residents per the daily schedule; i.e. chore assignments, passes, school attendance, meals, recreation, medical appointments, visits, and court appointments.
  2. Provide crisis intervention, situational and group counseling to residents.
  3. Participate in milieu treatment planning and implementation.
  4. Be aware of and coordinate with clinical treatment plan, i.e. exchange of information with therapists and planning residents’ attendance in counseling sessions.
  5. Attend all required staff meetings and in-service trainings as required.
  6. Record daily progress notes on each resident and file in case file.
  7. Complete the data entry of Special Incident Reports (SIR) in the computer on a daily basis.
  8. Perform other administrative tasks as assigned.
  9. Assure that clients have adequate clothing per the clothing inventory standards.  Complete a supply request for needs which cannot be met through existing supplies.
  10. Record all repair needs in the Maintenance Request Log and report to Property Manager via intranet.
  11. Report all janitorial and hygiene needs to a Supervisor.
  12. Supervise and give directions to the volunteers on the Unit.
  13. Transport residents to appointments using agency van and/or personal vehicle as required.
  14. Help to coordinate and prepare nutritional meals for the residents per our meal planning policy
  15. Assure administration of medications per the medication policies and assure the accuracy of medical documentation.
  16. For our medically fragile clients will provide basic patient care and treatments and administer prescribed medications. Provide routine, personal healthcare such as bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, moving in/out of bed, standing and walking.
  17. Attend regular individual supervision meetings with Supervisor. Report important incidents/concerns to Supervisor immediately.
