BHCIP Grant FAQ:
How the Grant Will Impact Our Organization

What is the grant, and how much was Casa de Amparo awarded? Casa de Amparo was awarded $19,981,840.60 in funding delivered through the Department of Health Care Services’ (DHCS) “Bond Behavioral Health Continuum Infrastructure Program (BHCIP): Round 1: Launch Ready.” This investment will fund the construction of the new Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility at Casa Kids Campus in San Marcos.

What is the purpose of this grant and how will it support Casa de Amparo's mission? This grant represents a historic milestone for Casa de Amparo and the community we’ve proudly served for more than four decades. The addition of a Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility builds on our legacy of protecting and healing children who have experienced trauma, while transforming how we care for youth with complex behavioral health needs.

What are the major milestones and timeline? Casa de Amparo plans to break ground in 2026. Construction will take approximately 18 months, and the facility will be operational in Spring 2028.

What is the new program, and who will Casa de Amparo serve? With the grant funding, Casa de Amparo will develop a 16-bed Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF) that will serve up to 100 youth annually. Casa de Amparo’s PRTF will address the critical lack of intensive, crisis-oriented residential mental health services for adolescents aged 12-21 in the county and surrounding areas.

How will this grant improve outcomes for the individuals we serve? This grant accelerates our goals of expanding care for youth in mental health crisis. The new facility represents an expansion of services to Medi-Cal eligible youth in California—regardless of foster status—ensuring more young people can access the care they need.
